Governor Ron DeSantis vetoes 4 bills

Press release from the Office of Governor Ron DeSantis

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—Today, Governor Ron DeSantis vetoed the following bills:

CS/CS/HB 181 – Parole

“CS/CS/HB 181 mandates the Florida Commission on Offender Review (FCOR)
to consider self-help programming and education classes taken by inmates while in
state custody when making parole decisions. Current law does not bar the
consideration of these factors; the proposed legislation appears to require FCOR to
assign weight to these factors. Therefore, this would likely result in making Florida’s
parole system more lenient.” – Governor DeSantis

HB 295 – Comprehensive Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan

“HB 295 directs the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to develop a
comprehensive waste reduction and recycling plan by July 1, 2026, to include public
education, market development, and options to reinstitute state-funded subsidized
grants for local recycling programs.

“This legislation is unnecessary as it perpetuates a cycle of plans and reports
without action and does not take into consideration that the private sector is
continuously implementing innovative ways to reduce waste.” – Governor Ron DeSantis

HB 827 – Statewide Study on Automation and Workforce Impact

“HB 827 directs the Department of Commerce to complete a comprehensive statewide
study on the impacts of automation, artificial intelligence (AI), and robotics on our
workforce, including a requirement to consider the impacts of job losses.

“Recognizing that AI trends are ever-evolving in delivery, skill development, and indemand career tracks, it makes no sense to wait for a report to be published by the state’s
labor statistics bureau. Indeed, such a report – to the extent it has value – would likely be
obsolete by the time it was actually published.” – Governor Ron DeSantis

CS/CS/SB 1574 – Energy Infrastructure Investment

“CS/CS/SB 1574 requires the Public Service Commission (PSC) to create a new
experimental rate mechanism to permit utilities to bill ratepayers for capital
investments in renewable natural gas. The bill also includes a provision requiring the
PSC to consider green energy credits when establishing and reviewing utility rate
requests that are inconsistent with state energy policy.” – Governor Ron DeSantis
