GPD announces arrest in attempted murder near campus; also investigating armed home invasion at Sorrento

The Gainesville Police Department (GPD) arrested a juvenile on charges of attempted murder on September 26, 2020 and firing multiple rounds into an apartment on June 18, 2020; the juvenile turned himself in to officers on September 30, 2020. The incident on September 26, 2020 occurred in the Subway parking lot at 1005 W. University Avenue.
In a separate incident on September 30, 2020, at approximately 1:21 a.m., GPD officers responded to the 4900 block of NW 20th Street (Sorrento) in response to calls of shots fired and a report of 2 suspects attempting to break into an apartment. The victims in the apartment were not hurt during the incident. One bullet struck the window of one victim’s room. Another victim returned fire at the suspects during the incident. It is unknown if either suspect was injured. Detectives located multiple shell casings and bullet fragments in the roadway in front of the residence, in the driveway, near the front door, and also inside the residence. GPD detectives are following up on several leads concerning the suspects. The suspects have not been located at this time.
