GPD arrest leads to child exploitation sentencing

On October 16, 2020, Diego Garcia Olaechea (DOB: 06/25/1983) was taken into custody by Gainesville Police Department Detective Montague and charged with 12 counts of Possession of Child Pornography and 1 Count of Distribution of Child Pornography. This was after the investigation revealed that Diego’s laptop contained over 10,000 images and videos combined, over 4,000 being identified as child sexual abuse material and 6,000 being identified as child erotica. Additionally, Diego admitted to sharing the child abuse material through his Skype platform. Diego also admitted to a history of possessing child abuse material and reported a fear that he may sexually abuse children.
This case was adopted for federal prosecution by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), but Diego ultimately accepted a plea agreement.
On November 16, 2021, Diego was sentenced to 72 months imprisonment and a maximum term of Life of supervised release. This effort was the result of a collaborative effort with HSI and the Gainesville Police Department.
