GPD investigates crash that fatally injured cyclist

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A 27-year-old male was killed yesterday when he attempted to cross NW 16th Avenue on his bicycle and was hit by a vehicle.

According to a release from Gainesville Police Department, on Wednesday, July 15, at approximately 9:20 p.m., officers responded to a traffic crash involving a vehicle and a bicyclist in the 300 block of NW 16th Avenue.

The preliminary investigation indicates the 27-year-old bicyclist was traveling westbound along the south side of NW 16th Avenue, utilizing the roadway/sidewalk area in the 200–300 block. The bicyclist attempted to cross NW 16th Avenue mid-block to the north side of the roadway and was struck by a westbound vehicle.

The bicyclist was transported to UF Health Shands Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

The driver remained on scene, and the investigation is continuing.
