GPD makes child exploitation arrest

Alex McCumber

Press release from Gainesville Police Department

On Tuesday, May 18, 2021, the Gainesville Police Department Internet Crimes against Children division, with the assistance of GPD SWAT, served a search warrant at 8401 NW 13th Street, #112. The investigation was prompted after GPD received a Cyber Tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). The Cyber Tip indicated that an account holder uploaded and shared child sexual abuse material (CSAM) through Instagram.

Subsequent to the Cyber Tip, GPD detectives obtained lawful access to the account information and the files that were shared. Two files were determined to be child sexual abuse material, one of a minor prepubescent child. Further investigation revealed that the account was linked to Alex McCumber (DOB: 09/08/1998) who lived at the residence to be searched. McCumber was interviewed by GPD detectives on May 18, 2021, and admitted to sharing and possessing the CSAM material. Two videos of CSAM were also located on his cell-phone. As a result of the search warrant, numerous electronic devices capable of storing digital media were seized. These devices are still undergoing a comprehensive forensic analysis. McCumber also stated that he had other illegal content that he previously deleted from his cell phone.

McCumber was arrested on one count of Distribution Child Pornography and two counts of Possession of Child Pornography.
