A Hawthorne man was shot by an Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy this afternoon after his wife said he was threatening to kill himself.
The incident began when the man’s wife called 911, saying her husband was intoxicated and threatening to shoot himself. The man was initially inside their house, but he came outside after deputies arrived. Deputies reported that the man did not comply with repeated commands to put down his handgun and said he wanted the deputies to shoot him. He was shot by a deputy at about 5:30 p.m.; the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office has not disclosed the sequence of events that led to the shooting. The man has been taken to the hospital with a gun shot wound in the abdomen.
