Hayfield fire north of Alachua contained, but CR235A still closed, smoke likely in area

Press release from Alachua County Fire Rescue

Today firefighters from Alachua County Fire Rescue and High Springs Fire Rescue responded to reports of a grass fire on County Road 235A just north of Alachua.

Firefighters arrived and found a large hayfield with approximately 5 acres on fire and heavy wind. The fire quickly spread across the field and into a neighboring tree line as firefighters worked to get ahead of the blaze.

The Division of Forestry responded with a dozer to place a fire line around the property. They now have the fire contained within those lines. We estimate that approximately 30 to 40 acres burned in total.

Drone footage from the ACFR UAS Team allowed our team to have an aerial view to keep up with the direction the fire was going. This enables us to be able to strategically place our units to protect nearby structures and to keep our firefighters safe.

NW CR235A is still closed for traffic between 177th and 190th Avenues. There will continue to be a haze of smoke in this area and parts of I-75 north of the Alachua exit. Please use caution when traveling in this area.
