Press release from Hippodrome Theatre
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Hippodrome Art Gallery is proud to present a solo exhibition by Jorge Ibanez, a Puerto Rican artist whose work delves into the depths of human experience and resilience. The exhibition will run from March 11 to April 22, with an Artwalk scheduled for Friday, March 29, 2024, from 7 to 10 pm.
In his artist statement, Ibanez invites viewers to reflect on the enduring impact of historical traumas and the perpetual cycle of destruction and renewal in human history. He poignantly addresses the challenges of the present moment, emphasizing the role of artists as “encoders” tasked with preserving humanity’s aspirations and fears for future generations.
“At this critical juncture in history, we are called upon to hold fast to our humanity and to nurture our capacity for wonder amidst life’s complexities,” says Ibanez.
Born in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, Ibanez has resided in Gainesville, Florida, for over four decades. His diverse artistic practice encompasses pastel, watercolor, linocut, photography, and acrylic, with a recent focus on acrylic and watercolor. Ibanez’s work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions throughout Florida and Puerto Rico, and his pieces adorn collections across the United States and Puerto Rico.
With a career spanning decades as the Coordinator of the Graphic Design Technology Program and Director of the Information Technology Program at Santa Fe College, along with co-founding Emiliano’s Cafe in Downtown Gainesville, Ibanez brings a wealth of experience and insight to his artistic endeavors.
“I have always considered my artistic work a testament to the enduring power of curiosity and wonder,” reflects Ibanez. “In a world often plagued by disillusionment, it is our duty to fiercely defend our capacity to marvel at the wonder of life.”
The Hippodrome Art Gallery invites the community to engage with Jorge Ibanez’s thought-provoking exhibition, offering a space for contemplation and dialogue on the human condition.
