The month opens with The Librarians, a timely documentary examining the nationwide book banning crisis sparked by Texas’s Krause List targeting 850 books focused on race and LGBTQIA+ stories. Following librarians as they face harassment and threats while fighting for freedom to read, the film offers a chilling cautionary tale about escalating censorship efforts. Two special screening events include a January 10 Q&A with film participants and the Texas Freedom to Read Project, and a January 11 event with local bookstore The Lynx providing resources and advocacy templates.

Director Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value stars Renate Reinsve, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, and Stellan Skarsgård in a family drama about estranged sisters navigating their complicated relationship with their once-renowned director father.

Jim Jarmusch’s influential black-and-white classic Stranger Than Paradise (1984 Cannes and Sundance winner) returns to the big screen on Saturday, January 10, at 8:30 p.m. Shot in striking black and white, this 1984 winner of the Cannes Golden Camera Award and Sundance Special Jury Recognition follows a New Yorker whose life spirals into an unpredictable adventure when his younger cousin unexpectedly visits. Starring John Lurie, Richard Edson, and Eszter Balint, the film remains a classic of American independent cinema.

Beginning January 16, the Cinema presents Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk, a documentary about daily life in Gaza captured through filmmaker Sepideh Farsi’s video calls with Palestinian photojournalist Fatma Hassona.

Screening alongside it is director Park Chan-wook’s No Other Choice, based on Donald E. Westlake’s novel The Ax. The acclaimed director of Old Boy and The Handmaiden presents the story of Man-su (Lee Byung-hun), who embarks on a desperate hunt for employment after his abrupt layoff from the paper company where he worked for 25 years.

Celebrating the Hippodrome Theatre’s mainstage production Some Enchanted Evening: The Songs of Rodgers and Hammerstein (opening January 30), the Cinema screens two classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals: Oklahoma! on January 18 and South Pacific on January 25.

The month culminates with Sam Raimi’s Army of Darkness for January’s Cocktails & Classics on January 24, timed with the Hoggetowne Medieval Faire at Depot Park. Bruce Campbell stars as Ash, a chainsaw-armed hero battling the undead in England’s Dark Ages. Specialty cocktails included with admission.

“January’s programming reflects our commitment to films that both entertain and engage,” said Naheed Mojadidi, Cinema Director at the Hippodrome. “We’re offering something for every film lover to start the new year.”
