Hippodrome Theatre presents: New Works Festival 2023

Press release from Hippodrome Theatre

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Since its inception in 2020, The Hippodrome Theatre’s annual New Works Festival has been a steadfast beacon for narrative voices in Florida, nurturing the development of plays in both traditional and experimental forms. This year, the festival returns to champion and showcase two compelling plays: “The Art of Floating” by Jennifer A. Kokai and “Slaymaker” by Bethany Dickens Assaf.

The New Works Festival is a vibrant mosaic of storytelling, reflecting the rich tapestry of artists in Florida and their unique perspectives on the American experience. It is a platform where audacious and thought-provoking content, formats, and styles come to life.

The Art of Floating by Jennifer A. Koka
Friday, October 13, at 7:30 p.m.

Marian lives in the sleepy town of Spring Hill, Florida, where she spends her days at the senior citizen center, sharing wine with her best friend Fran. However, when her estranged granddaughter moves in, remarkable things begin to happen. “The Art of Floating” is a poignant play that explores themes of death, faith, and learning to navigate life’s challenges with grace.

Slaymaker by Bethany Dickens Assaf
Saturday, October 14, at 7:30 p.m.

Jay and Meghan both lay claim to the illustrious surname “Slaymaker,” especially fitting for a Magic: The Gathering champion. However, with their divorce pending and Meghan penning articles about gender challenges in the world of Magic, a Magic tournament emerges as the battleground for their dispute. If Meghan wins, she keeps “Slaymaker,” but if Jay prevails, everything could change. “Slaymaker” is a witty exploration of rivalry, identity, and the power of a card game.
