Historic Troop 84 to celebrate its 100-year anniversary on May 16

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Troop 84, formerly known as Troop 2, proudly announces its 100-year Centennial Celebration, honoring a century of service, leadership, and community impact.
The celebration will be held on Saturday, May 16th, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of First United Methodist Church (419 NE 1st St.). The Centennial Celebration will feature a special dinner event open to the public, with proceeds supporting the troop’s ongoing programs, outdoor adventures, and scholarships for scouts. Community members, families, alumni, and supporters are encouraged to purchase dinner tickets and take part in this historic evening.
Established in Gainesville and deeply rooted in local history, Troop 84 has long called First United Methodist Church its home and continues to uphold tradition at the storied Burt Ames Cabin—built by Burt Ames himself.
Troop 84 has a proud history of assisting young people reach their full potential. Past scouts of this troop have grown up to excel in various professions such as doctors, a NASA scientist, and an entertainer (Tom Petty). A review of Troop 84’s history also reflects several distinguished University of Florida administrators’ families that participated in various scouting activities throughout the years. This legacy, combined with generations of Eagle Scouts, community projects, and outdoor leadership, makes this centennial milestone a momentous occasion for the Gainesville community.
Troop 84 is also seeking event sponsors to help elevate the celebration and support future scouting opportunities. Sponsorship packages will offer promotional opportunities, recognition during the event, and lasting contributions to the legacy of Gainesville scouting.
