Gainesville Police Department (GPD) received a call on Monday from a contractor who discovered jars of what appeared to be human remains in a crawl space under a house while assessing it for repair.
After opening the jars and seeing what was inside, he left and called GPD. The Medical Examiner’s Office is examining the specimens, which appear to include tongues and possibly a fetus.
Preliminary information indicates that the homeowner’s ex-husband is a retired pathologist who used the body parts for his research and kept them when he moved here from out of state. He put them under the house to preserve them in a cool place and forgot they were there. The specimens appear to be from the 1960s.
Investigation is ongoing.
