Jewish New Year celebration to be held at the UF O’Connell Center

Press release from Chabad UF Jewish Student and Community Center

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – On Wednesday evening, October 2, 2024, Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, will commence. The Chabad UF Jewish Student and Community Center will host the largest Rosh Hashanah dinner and celebration in North America.

“It’s a special and opportune time for the Jewish community, particularly this year, with the rise in anti-Semitism and anti-Israel sentiments, Jewish people are feeling more connected to each other and to their religion. What better way than to gather together and celebrate the start of a hopeful New Year, to pray on behalf of the people in Israel and for all people around the world,” said Rabbi Berl Goldman, the director of the Center.

The New Year Celebration Will Kick Off at the UF O’Dome Stadium, beginning at 5:00 p.m. There will be special prayers included for the IDF, the hostages, and all the people in Israel. UF President Kent Fuchs is scheduled to join the Rosh Hashanah Eve celebration and share holiday greetings. There will be other special dignitaries and guests in attendance.

There are no fees or membership to join. All are welcome, free of charge, regardless of background or affiliation. There are extensive security protocols in place to ensure that all attendees feel safe.

“YES, we are returning to the O’Dome for Rosh Hashanah Eve, to accommodate all the students, faculty and community who depend on us year-round and even more so for the High Holidays” said Chanie Goldman, co-director: “Since many students are unable to go home, we are here to provide them with a home away from home and delicious home-style holiday cooked meal”.

“According to Jewish tradition, during the New Year, the doors of Heaven are open and G-d accepts all prayers.  We too are opening our doors and everyone is invited to join,” added Daniel Mundlak, president of the UF Chabad Student Group.

Rabbi Berl Goldman added appreciation to the holiday sponsors: “It is thanks to the generous donors from the community, alumni, and parents that make the High Holiday services, programs, and delicious meals possible, free of charge for the students; they are true partners both spiritually and physically and have great merit”.

The Rosh Hashanah Jewish New Year Event will take place on October 2. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. at the UF O’Connell Center – Exactech Arena.
