Jimmy Jiang from the Frazer School qualifies for national Chemistry Olympiad Study Camp

Press release from the Frazer School

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Jimmy Jiang, an 11th-grader at The Frazer School, was named one of the 20 finalists who will participate in the Chemistry Olympiad Study Camp at the University of Maryland, June 1-14, 2025. Jimmy has been one of those 20 for the past two years already, and last week, while he was boarding the bus home from Science Bowl Nationals in Washington, D.C., he got the call that makes it three in a row. Jimmy is one of only three students in the country to be selected for this year’s prestigious camp after also being invited to the last two.

The U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO) program is a multi-tiered chemistry competition for high school students. The American Chemical Society (ACS), a non-profit organization founded in 1876 and chartered by the U.S. Congress, has sponsored the program since 1984. Each year, 20 students in the United States are selected, based on competition results, by the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad as finalists to participate in a study camp in June to undergo rigorous training. Based on their performance, four students are chosen to represent the U.S. at the International Chemistry Olympiad.

“Jimmy is the chemistry anchor for our nationally competitive Science Bowl team, and his selection comes as no surprise to me.” explains Marc Moody, the science team coach at Frazer School, where Jimmy is a junior. “We are all pulling for him to make the team this year,” says Moody, “but it is going to be difficult for him without having taken Organic Chemistry.” David Buffkin, The Frazer School’s chemistry teacher, notes that “Jimmy, of his own volition, organized Chemistry Club this year after school to help prepare the next generation of our chemists to succeed in his footsteps.” The results of the team selection will be known this summer.
