Law enforcement investigates suspected explosive device in High Springs

High Springs Police Department officers are currently on scene in the area of 17500 NW 242nd Street alongside the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office and Alachua Police Department following the discovery of a suspected explosive device by a resident.

The device appears to be an old grenade that was located on the property and may have been there for an extended period of time. Out of an abundance of caution, law enforcement personnel are evacuating the immediate area while specialized explosive ordnance experts respond to assess and safely handle the device.

We ask residents to avoid the area and follow any directions provided by law enforcement personnel on scene. At this time, there is no indication that this is related to any criminal activity; however, safety remains our top priority while the device is evaluated.
