Man transported to hospital after he set a fire in his apartment and barricaded himself inside

At approximately 5:30 a.m. today, crews from Alachua County Fire Rescue and Gainesville Fire Rescue were dispatched at the request of the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (SAO) after a man barricaded himself inside of an apartment and set it on fire.

Fire rescue was cleared to come to the scene once the subject had exited the apartment and had been detained by ASO. When they arrived, they found heavy black smoke coming from a duplex with an active fire in the kitchen and living room. Crews made an aggressive interior attack and extinguished the fire in under five minutes. The individual who started the fire was transported to UF Health Shands for treatment. The State Fire Marshal is investigating the incident.
