GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Students in the Little House classroom at Millhopper Montessori School enjoyed an exciting hands-on learning experience when parent and local firefighter Christopher Silcox, along with members of the Engine 7 crew, visited campus with a fire engine to share their equipment and expertise.

The visit gave the school’s youngest learners, ages 2 and 3, an up-close look at the tools firefighters use every day to keep the community safe. Students explored the truck, examined the gear, and learned about fire safety in an engaging and memorable way.

Silcox and the crew demonstrated how the equipment works, showed what firefighters wear for protection, and explained how they help people during emergencies. For many of the children, it was their first time seeing a fire truck up close and stepping inside.

“This hands-on opportunity helped the children feel comfortable and confident, so that if they ever encounter a firefighter during an emergency, they will recognize them as helpers rather than something to fear. The visit beautifully reflected the Montessori philosophy of experiential learning, and with so many of our children currently fascinated by fire trucks, seeing one up close was both inspiring and exciting for them, ” said Lizzy Levensohn, Little House Lead Teacher at Millhopper Montessori School.

The school is grateful to Christopher Silcox and the Engine 7 crew for volunteering their time and creating such a meaningful learning experience for Little House students.
