Music teacher and “Brownie Guy” team up to feed workers on the front lines
BY JENNIFER CABRERA
Katie Malo, a music teacher at Meadowbrook Elementary School, and Chris DeVeau, the Brownie Guy, have started a Facebook group to feed local front-line workers while also helping local restaurants.
Malo tells their story on the group’s Facebook page: “A few weeks ago, I noticed that a NFRMC nurse posted about ordering brownies from our localĀ Brownie Guy! I wanted to help, so I offered to donate some money to chip in for brownies. Then I thought that if I wanted to help, surely other people would want to help! Boy oh boy, was I right! In one day, we raised over $450. A week or so later, the Brownie Guy messaged me and we discussed doing the same kindĀ of thing but on a MUCH bigger scale!”
DeVeau is handling the food side of the project, along with Mothers and Sushi 2 Go, while Malo handles the fundraising side. They hope to expand to help other restaurants soon.
They are raising money to feed local essential employees such as doctors, nurses, pharmacists, grocery store employees, or others who are working hard on the front lines.
The group has fed workers at North Florida Regional Medical Center twice through Brownie Guy and once through Haile Pub.
Their current goal is to raise $700 by tonight. Of course, the goal is to keep raising money and distributing food as long as it is needed.
Here’s how you can help:
- Share the Facebook group.
- Send money via Venmo to @HungryHometownHeroesGNV
- Post on the Facebook page if you know of workers who could use a treat.
