National Reunification Month celebrates reuniting children in foster care with their families

Press release from the Partnership for Strong Families

ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – During National Reunification Month this June, Partnership for Strong Families (PSF) is celebrating one of the most meaningful successes in child welfare: safely reuniting children in foster care with their families.

Every child deserves the opportunity to grow up surrounded by love, support, and connection with family. During National Reunification Month this June, Partnership for Strong Families is honoring the parents across North Central Florida who worked hard to bring their children home, the children whose resilience inspires us every day, and the many caregivers and professionals who help make these reunifications possible. Most importantly, PSF recognizes that reunification is not simply the end of a child welfare case; it is the beginning of a new chapter for families working to build a stronger future together.

For families involved in the child welfare system, the journey to reunification is often one of profound growth and transformation. Parents are provided with opportunities to access services, build new skills, strengthen protective factors, and address challenges that may have affected their family’s stability. For many, this process includes breaking cycles of generational trauma, learning healthier ways to manage stress and relationships, and developing nurturing parenting practices that create a safe and supportive environment for their children. Along the way, children navigate periods of change and uncertainty while holding onto hope for the day they can return home and reconnect with the people they love most.

National Reunification Month recognizes these journeys and celebrates the strength, perseverance, and resilience of families who have successfully reunited. It is also a reminder that behind every reunification is a child who longs for connection, a parent who never stopped fighting for their family, and a community that believed healing was possible.

While foster care provides temporary safety and support when children cannot remain at home, reunification with parents is the preferred outcome whenever it can be achieved safely. Research consistently shows that children experience the best outcomes when families receive individualized support, meaningful engagement, and access to services that help them build lasting stability.

Successful reunification is never the work of one person alone. It is the result of parents, children, foster parents, relative caregivers, case managers, therapists, legal advocates, educators, and community partners all working together toward a common goal: helping families heal and remain safely together.

Ginger Griffeth, President & CEO, Partnership for Strong Families, said, “Family reunification is one of the most meaningful outcomes we can achieve in child welfare. When children can safely return home, it reflects the hard work, resilience, and commitment of parents, caregivers, case managers, service providers, and community partners working together toward a shared goal. Reunification is more than a milestone; it is a reminder that families can heal, grow, and overcome challenges when they have access to the right supports and opportunities. During Reunification Month, we celebrate the strength of families who have persevered, honor the professionals who walk alongside them, and reaffirm our commitment to helping children maintain safe, stable, and lasting connections with the people who love them most.”
