One fatality, one trauma alert in head-on accident west of Melrose

A 43-year-old Hawthorne woman was killed and a 51-year-old Trenton man was critically injured in a head-on accident on SR 26 west of Melrose this morning.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, an SUV, driven by the Trenton man, was traveling east on SR 26 and crossed the center line, striking a sedan, driven by the Hawthorne woman, head-on.

The Melrose, Alachua County, and Windsor Fire Departments responded to the accident and transported the man to Shands at UF Health. 

Alachua County Fire Rescue would like to remind everyone to obey the posted speed limit, never text and drive, move over for emergency vehicles, and always buckle up.
