P.K. Yonge wins Spoonbill Bowl

Press release from National Ocean Sciences Bowl
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – On March 23, students from P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School in Gainesville won the Spoonbill Bowl, a regional ocean science academic competition that is part of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB). The Spoonbill Bowl, hosted by the University of South Florida, is part of a nationwide competition that tests students’ knowledge of ocean science disciplines through buzzer-style, multiple-choice questions and open-ended team challenge questions. Students on the championship team include Will Mercado, Abigail Pruden, Amira Souik, and Xochitl Rios. They are coached by Amy Pruden.
The NOSB is building our next generation of marine scientists, policy makers, teachers, explorers, researchers, technicians, environmental advocates, and informed community members by educating them in ocean science topics that are increasingly relevant today and into the future. The NOSB is an academic competition of the Center for Ocean Leadership (COL), a University Corporation for Atmospheric Research Community Program.
“Congratulations to our regional winners,” said Dr. Sonya Legg, COL Director. “You are to be commended for your many months of study and preparation for competition. Importantly, you’ve learned more than how to successfully compete – you’ve learned about the many challenges facing our global ocean and how each and every one of you can play a crucial role in addressing those challenges as an ocean-literate community member. I’d also like to thank our regional coordinators and volunteers. The NOSB can only succeed with your continued dedication to the program and its students.”
The 2024 NOSB regional competitions are made possible through the following major sponsors:
- National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Gulf Research Program
