RTS bus strikes pedestrian

On Tuesday evening at about 6:30 p.m., Gainesville Police Department (GPD) officers were dispatched to the intersection of SW 34th Street and SW 24th Avenue because of a crash with injuries that involved an RTS bus and a pedestrian.

Preliminary investigation showed that the RTS bus was traveling south on SW 34th St in the inside (median) lane. The pedestrian, an elderly man, was crossing the street from the west side of the road to the central median strip, just south of SW 24th Ave, when he was struck by the bus.

The elderly man was transported to the hospital under a “trauma alert,” and based upon the extent of his injuries, a traffic homicide investigation commenced. The investigation is ongoing.
