Sheriff Darnell stops transfers into jail, weekenders
BY JENNIFER CABRERA
According to a release from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO), Sheriff Darnell, in accordance with FSA guidance, has approved the ACSO to stop transfers into the Alachua County jail for any and all non-capital offenses, addressed on a case-by-case basis, until further notice; this includes air travel.
Also, the Chief Judge has approved a request for the immediate suspension of the weekend sentence program until further notice, including all current weekend sentences. This would be a suspension and not an elimination of the jail sentence. Those currently ordered to serve weekends must complete their sentence upon the lifting of the suspension. The individuals affected would remain on probation during this period.
Evictions are still occurring because they are orders that are time-sensitive. They are waiting on word from the Chief Judge about suspension of the eviction process. They said they are trying to be as compassionate as possible, but the Sheriff does not have the authority to not enforce these orders.
