GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Star Center Theatre will present “Seussical Jr.” on January 28 at the Curtis M. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts (3201 Hull Road).
The musical is just over 60 minutes long, with a 15-minute intermission, and it is based on various Dr. Seuss books. The show has a cast consisting completely of youth, with most cast members attending schools in Alachua County. This show is part of Star Center’s 2025-2026 youth series that includes Descendants Jr. and The Wiz Jr.
Seussical Jr. tells the story of various Dr. Seuss characters from over 15 books, including Horton the elephant. Horton finds the tiny world of “The Whos,” and he must care for them despite everyone calling him crazy because they don’t believe him. On the tiny world lives Jojo and the other Whos, including Jojo’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mayor. Jojo is constantly getting in trouble due to the Cat in the Hat, as well as his big imagination. Meanwhile, Horton’s friend and neighbor, Gertrude Mcfuzz, wishes to have a larger tail because she wants to get Horton’s attention, so she goes to Mayzie LaBird for advice because Mayzie has a large tail. Gertrude and Mayzie are just two of the jungle characters that become part of Horton’s story as he discovers his own path. With the help of Jojo, Horton must prove that the tiny world of the Whos is real before it’s too late.
