The Visionaires to host second school rezoning Town Hall on Feb. 23

Press release from The Visionaires

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – On Monday, February 23, at 6 p.m., the members of The Visionaires, Inc., in collaboration with the Alachua County NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), are hosting a second town-hall meeting to discuss the significance of the maps being presented by Alachua County Public Schools to the citizens of Alachua County.

The town hall will be held at Upper Room Ministries (3575 NE 15th Street).

The proposed changes were presented by Alachua County Public Schools as part of the second phase of its “Our Schools Future Ready” comprehensive school planning initiative. The main objective of this town hall meeting is to specifically engage with the Eastside of Gainesville communities served by those schools proposed for closure, as outlined in the various scenarios. The schools proposed for closure or consolidation include Duval Early Learning Academy, Marjorie K. Rawlings Elementary School, Joseph Williams Elementary School – all within the Eastside of Gainesville – as well as Stephen Foster Elementary School and Alachua Elementary School.

The Visionaires, Inc. is a local civic and social club, established in 1938 to address the educational and cultural needs of the community’s African-American population. Now, 88 years later, we are still working to meet those needs. The NAACP is, of course, the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization.  Its Alachua County branch has worked tirelessly for 80 years to advocate for and protect civil rights.

This town hall meeting is open to the public.
