Thelma Boltin Trailhead and Sweetwater Greenway Loop trail alignment workshop to be held June 30

Press release from the City of Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The City of Gainesville’s Wild Spaces & Public Places Department and Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department are beginning a planning effort for the future redevelopment of the former Thelma A. Boltin Center site, located at 516 NE Second Ave.

In September 2025, the Gainesville City Commission voted to demolish the Thelma A. Boltin Center and reimagine the property as a trailhead along the Sweetwater Greenway Loop trail system. As directed by the City Commission, this redevelopment effort will explore opportunities to honor the site’s historic and cultural significance, including its role during World War II and its legacy as a community gathering place. The planning process will also consider the creation of a functional outdoor community space, stormwater improvements to help reduce neighborhood flooding, and opportunities to celebrate the folk art traditions that Thelma Boltin championed throughout her career.
