Tom Petty Park racquetball court demolition to begin July 1

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Demolition of the Tom Petty Park racquetball courts will begin the week of July 1. Removal of the courts is the first phase of construction to allow for improvements coming to the park in 2025.

Planned upgrades, managed by the the City of Gainesville’s Wild Spaces & Public Places program, include the addition of eight dedicated pickleball courts, added seating areas, a new pavilion, a pedestrian entrance from the Northeast 16th Ave. crosswalk, re-routing the multi-purpose trail for ADA accessibility, renovating and enlarging the restrooms, upgrades to the landscaping, and code-required modifications to the park’s stormwater management basins.

Save the date

A third meeting on Tom Petty Park Improvements will be held on Wed., July 17, from 6-7 p.m. at the Library Partnership Branch at 912 NE 16th Ave. Notices regarding the meeting will be mailed to neighbors via the post office and sent electronically beginning next week.

  • No one played racquetball there anyway. Those courts were just secluded places for murders and rapes.

  • Wasn’t “Racket Man” one of Petty’s hits? or was it “Wild Spaces Oddity”? Ground control to Gator Tom . . .

  • When is that city going to realize what they are doing to wast funds and create more “homeless homes”. I played racquetball on those courts 30 years ago. Even then we had to clean the courts and find the one that didn’t smell of urine. Plus the condom s laying on the courts. Move the park or get rid of the areas that are misused. How about fixing City and county roads.
