Press release from Alachua County
ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – Beginning Friday, Oct. 18, 2024, Alachua County will open two residential hurricane vegetative debris disposal sites for residents of the county to use.
The sites are:
- Northwest Landfill – 15404 CR 235A in Alachua

Both locations are open every day from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The sites are for Alachua County residents only. Users must provide their name, address, and driver’s license. The center doesn’t accept debris from commercial parcels or commercial debris removal companies. The sites are for hurricane vegetative debris only
Why should residents be bringing yard trash to the dump, when we pay taxes to have it removed! We are STILL WAITING, for the County to pick ours up! It’s been 4 weeks, and still the county is dragging their feet picking up our neighborhood!
They are not dragging their feet. They have 3rd party vendors and Public Works working 7 days a week on debris pick up. It hasn’t been 4 weeks, it has been 3 weeks since Hurricane Helene made landfall and 2 weeks since the County signed the contracts with the 3rd party vendors. Last week there was another storm. The western portion of the County sustained considerable damage during Hurricane Helene and there is a lot of debris. All Counties, blue and red, are dealing with this and it is not something that can be resolved in one or two weeks. The County is solely giving residents another option for debris pick-up. County employees are doing their best working very long hours, and many who are salaried are getting no compensation for the overtime. I can’t image how you would survive living in harder hit areas.
I’ve been through many hurricanes worse than this…they are slack on the pick-up…
I have called the county because it HAS BEEN FOUR WEEKS SINCE ANY PICKUP IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD!😡
Doesn’t Gainesville have a bio mass incinerator? They must be going to use that for future hurricane vegetative waste not this waste.
Not a chance. That is only what they originally claimed they would do.
the biomass plant may be off-line because it’s too expensive to use…
Bielarski said they ain’t putting storm debris in it and it was supposed to take it when they sold us the bill of goods “big lie”
Climate change stopper…
Hanranhan & co bankrupted GRU trying to stop climate change…
stupid is as stupid does.
Jazz would say :
“ yeah, the utility authority got to pick up the biomass and put it in the incinerator and generate electricity,,..
the authority ain’t doing its job! …
give the GNVCc back GRU so the storm debris will be collected and burned and we’ll stop climate change and blah blah blah..🤮
Go woke, go broke….
Hey useless failed commissioners. Pick up our yard waste or resign. It’s just not that hard to be productive .
Why aren’t they picking up our paper bags of debris? I can see the third party vendor picking up the huge piles of debris that require the claw and big trucks, but why can’t our regular guys pick up the paper bags?
they waited 2 weeks and collected our money and didn’t do the job!
My garbage can was full …
didn’t see any garbage trucks at all either during that time…
my pile of yard debris is going on 3 weeks
I’ve been asking that same question. It’s not that hard to pick up the paper bags. But once they get rained on two or three times they will start to deteriorate. I wondering if the commission told GFL not worry about the bags. They picked up my debris that was in my plastic garbage can. But of course my paper bags are still here. And growing by the week as I continue to pick up my yard. SMH!!!
As the leader of the Citizen’s Joint Alachua County and City of Gainesville Hurricane Debris Street Team, I am happy to announce a new site for unlimited dumping of yard waste, hurricane debris, food waste, old paint, and medical waste such as soiled diapers:
Gainesville City Hall
200 E. University Ave., Gainesville, FL 32601
Dumping is permitted 24/7 and is free to the public. We only ask that you pile your debris in the area right outside the front doors, to make sure that we see it. Bagging your waste is not necessary, please feel free to just toss it onto the pile.
Don’t feel concerned that you have never and will never see a member of our street team on the street or anywhere else, at any time of day or night, ever. This is perfectly normal for highly funded street teams and we follow the GRACE Marketplace model.
The debris challenge statewide and within each county is enormous. We can assure residents that every resource possible is being marshaled. We understand and share in the frustration. We will methodically go out daily with every resource possible until it’s done.
Then how come you aren’t pushing this vegetative bio mass waste through our very expensive bio mass incinerator? Why use landfill space?
Taxpayer: 💥‼️
Hear them crickets & cicadas? 🎶🦗🦗🦗🎶🎶🎶🦗🦗🦗🦗🦗🦗🦗
Why hasn’t Kamala come with our aid?
I see all these Harris signs in the duck pond….
Oh, they’re working hard!
My garbage can was finally emptied Wednesday ….3 weeks worth …
I got a debris pile by the curb 4’x12” what’s been there 3 weeks!
What happened to it being picked up. I am unable to move my debris due to a handicap.
This is for people who don’t want to wait for it to be picked up.
