The Gator gymnastics duo who earned perfect 10.0s last Saturday have claimed Southeastern Conference weekly honors. Sophomore Trinity Thomas is the SEC Gymnast of the Week, and senior teammate Rachel Gowey claims the SEC Specialist Gymnast of the Week award.
Here’s a look at their performances in Florida’s March 7 win at Penn State:
Thomas’ All-Around Win:
*Â Â Â Â Shared the league’s top total for the week (39.525) to win her seventh consecutive all-around (and eighth overall of 2020) title at No. 25 Penn State.
*Â Â Â Â Her 10.0 floor routine was the first of her collegiate career, and she is now the nation’s only gymnast with a 10.0 on three events (bars, beam, floor)
*Â Â Â Â She is one of two in the nation to post a 10.0 on floor in 2020. Of the four events, the two 10.0s for floor is the least number of perfect marks.
*Â Â Â Â She now has four 10.0s in 2020 (bars, beam (2x), floor)
*Â Â Â Â This was the 14th all-around win of her collegiate career.
*Â Â Â Â She had three event wins at PSU: all-around (39.525), uneven bars (tie 9.95), floor exercise (10.0). She was second in vault at 9.90
*Â Â Â Â She’s had 28 event titles in 2020 and 54 for her collegiate career, placing her 10th on Florida’s career event titles chart (54). She is one of three that have made the list as a sophomore.
*Â Â Â Â Thomas’s current Road to National rankings: all-around (No. 2), vault (No. 14), uneven bars (No. T-4), balance beam (No. T-2) and floor exercise (No. 1).
This is the seventh straight Southeastern Conference Gymnast of the Week honor for Thomas. This is her eighth SEC Gymnast of the Week recognition of 2020 and 11th of her Gator career. Her eight SEC Gymnast of the Week honors surpass the previous single-season high of seven by LSU’s Sarah Finnegan in 2019.
Gowey’s SEC Specialist of Week honor:
*Â Â Â Â She posted two collegiate bests and a season best in Florida’s win at No. 25 Penn State
*Â Â Â Â Her 10.0 on beam claimed her first event title of the season. Gowey joins teammate Trinity Thomas to make Florida the only team in the nation with two gymnasts earning a 10.0 on beam in 2020.
*Â Â Â Â The score gives Gowey eight beam marks of 9.9 or better in 2020
*Â Â Â Â She led off Florida’s floor lineup with a collegiate best 9.925 to share second. Florida’s 49.70 on floor is a season-best and ties for No. 5 all-time for the program. Gowey has turned in her previous floor best of 9.9 twice as a senior.
*Â Â Â Â She also turned in a season-best 9.925 on uneven bars to take third.
*Â Â Â Â This is the second SEC Specialist of Week honor of her career. She also claimed the January. 22, 2019 honor.
*Â Â Â Â She is No. 6 in current beam rankings (9.945)
