UF Hillel hosts 6th annual “Spread Cream Cheese Not Hate” Bagel Day program amid alarming rise in antisemitism

Press release from UF Hillel
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Today the University of Florida (UF) campus is coming together to stand against antisemitism during UF Hillel’s 6th Annual “Spread Cream Cheese Not Hate” Bagel Day program. The event will bring together more than 500 student volunteers—both Jewish and non-Jewish— along with over 100 student organizations participating in the campus partner program.
The program’s goal is to secure 6,000 signatures on the “Spread Cream Cheese Not Hate” pledge, through which signers commit to combat antisemitism and all forms of hate. The 2024 Bagel Day program garnered the support of 5,300 signers with 65% identifying as non-Jewish allies. In appreciation for signing the pledge, participants can pick up a free bagel and cream cheese courtesy of Hillel at one of three locations on Wednesday—Turlington Plaza, the Plaza of the Americas, or UF Hillel—between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
While the bagel may be the symbol for the program, in reality it serves as an invitation for a conversation. According to the Anti-Defamation League, the United States has seen a disturbing increase in antisemitic incidents in recent years, reaching the highest levels recorded in decades. With one of the largest Jewish student populations in the country, UF has an important role in addressing this issue and creating a safe, supportive environment for all students.
“Spread Cream Cheese Not Hate” was founded in January 2020 by UF Hillel to combat antisemitism through education, dialogue, and community-building. This year’s event highlights the strength of collaboration, with diverse campus partners and generous sponsors making the program possible.
