Weekly Gator STEP Data

Press release from Gainesville Police Department

The following data reflects citations, warnings, and tickets issued by the Gainesville Police Department (GPD) on West University Avenue from March 22-29, 2021. This data is part of GPD’s Gator STEP (Special Traffic Enforcement Program).

GPD continues to focus its efforts on West University Avenue from 34th Street to 13th Street.

Spring Break for the Alachua County School District saw a reduction in vehicles on the roadway and, in turn, a drop in traffic stops. There were two traffic crashes; both were rear end collisions.

Traffic Tip for the week:

“Florida law defines the term ‘following too closely’ as when a driver of a motor vehicle is not to follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of such vehicles and the traffic upon, and the condition of, the highway.”

GPD would like to remind drivers that different conditions can determine the appropriate and safe following distance. Weather, lighting, pedestrian traffic, vehicle traffic, and overall roadway conditions should determine the safe following distance. Be safe, avoid distractions, and allow yourself plenty of time to stop.
