Weekly Gator STEP data

Press release from Gainesville Police Department

The following data reflects citations, warnings, and tickets issued by the Gainesville Police Department (GPD) on West University Avenue from March 29-April 5, 2021. This data is part of GPD’s Gator STEP (Special Traffic Enforcement Program).

GPD’s resources were devoted to SW 20th Avenue this past week due to the recent traffic fatalities in the 5700-6200 block.

GPD also started our FDOT-funded education detail. Personnel working the details focused on vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian violations. The primary focus of the detail is educating the citizens, and officers use citations as a last resort. The educational component will include officers giving verbal warnings, as well as distributing the educational campaign materials to citizens they come into contact with during the details. The detail focused on high-traffic areas of the city.

Traffic Tip for the week:

“Florida Law defines Careless Driving as a failure of the driver to operate a vehicle upon the streets or highways in a careful and prudent manner, having regard for the width, grade, curves, corners, traffic, and all other attendant circumstances, so as not to endanger the life, limb, or property of any person.”

GPD wants to remind drivers when entering high pedestrian traffic areas, please be careful, reduce speed, and avoid distractions.

If any of our neighbors have ideas or questions they’d like to share with GPD concerning Gator STEP, please feel free to contact us at gpdpio@cityofgainesville.org
