10-year-old arrested on I-75 after three-hour joyride in mom’s car

Staff report

ALACHUA, Fla. – At about 3:50 a.m. this morning, Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputies stopped a stolen vehicle on I-75 and found that the driver was the 10-year-old son of the car’s owner.

The sedan, which was earlier reported stolen out of North Port, Fla., was located near the city of Alachua, and deputies conducted a high-risk traffic stop. Deputies were surprised when they found the driver was a 10-year-old boy; his 11-year-old sister was also in the car. The siblings had been reported missing to the North Port Police Department, and the car belonged to their mother.

After the children’s mother was called, she drove three hours to take custody of them and declined to press charges.

  • Oh boy! It’s only just begun and they’re not even teenagers yet. Good luck! You’ll need it.

  • Mmmm no investigation on mom? Maybe there was a reason they were running in middle of the night. I pray that is not the case.

  • Did the boy get a civil traffic citation for driving without a valid driver’s license? How about failure to provide proof of registration? Seatbelt? Anything?

This is one of those times when the parent should be held accountable. Just saying.

  • Glad no one was hurt or killed would like to know where the kids thought they going and why
maybe the state attorney can bring a charge that leads to an investigation some things do not add up,

  • A 10-year drove on I-75 for over 3 hours without an accident? I’d give him a good driver award! He’s better than the crazies you see on that highway.
