15-year-old student arrested for taking gun to GHS, pointing it at student and his mother

Staff report from Gainesville Police Department release

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A 15-year-old student was arrested this afternoon after allegedly bringing a handgun onto the Gainesville High School campus, displaying it during an altercation with another student, and later pointing it at the same student and his mother.

At about 12:27 p.m. on June 17, School Resource Officers at GHS learned that a student had brought a firearm onto campus and had displayed it while confronting another student. The incident stemmed from an ongoing dispute that had begun the previous evening.

After the confrontation, the victim was leaving Gainesville High School with his mother when they observed the suspect a short distance from campus. The suspect reportedly drew a handgun and pointed it at both the victim and his mother, who immediately returned to the school and reported the incident to the School Resource Officer.

Officers quickly located the suspect, a 15-year-old male, a short distance from the school. He was still in possession of the handgun, which was later determined to be stolen.

The juvenile was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm on school property, possession of a firearm by a juvenile, and possession of a stolen firearm. He was transported to the Juvenile Detention Center.

Gainesville Police Department noted that the swift actions of the victim, his mother, school staff, and responding officers may have prevented a tragedy.

  • Another fresh body for the school to prison pipeline. He did this to himself, thankfully LE was able to find him and take him into custody before someone was shot.

  • Are the parents going to be charged too? I thought we were holding parents accountable if the child is younger than 18?

  • Was he raised in the nearby Section 8 taxpayerxfunded apts off 16th Ave, per chance? Why don’t taxpayer-funded apts screen residents and families there better?

    • What facts are in this article upon which you base the assumption that a pre-rental screening of the child’s family would have alerted some apartment complex that this child would do this? Or do you think real life is like Minority Report?
