17-year-old charged as adult with armed robberies

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Ken’montae Ignazio Davon Mitchell, 17, has been charged as an adult with two armed robbery incidents and battery by a person detained in a correctional facility.

At about 7:30 p .m. on November 26, 2023, a Gainesville Police Department officer responded to a call about an armed robbery at Fred Cone Park. The victim reportedly said he had arranged to meet an unidentified male to purchase an Xbox that had been advertised on Facebook Marketplace for $200. He said the seller showed him a bag containing an Xbox, but the controller wasn’t in the bag, so the seller left the park on foot and came back about five minutes later with the controller. When the victim took out the cash, he said, the seller took the cash, pulled out a handgun, pointed it at him, and said, “Don’t move or I’ll shoot you.” The seller then grabbed the bag with the Xbox and ran.

At about 2:15 a.m. on November 27, 2023, a different victim reported that he arranged to meet an unidentified male at Fred Cone Park to purchase an Xbox for $250. The second victim also reported that when he took out the cash, the seller took the cash and pulled out a gun, pointed it at him, grabbed the bag with the Xbox, and ran.

The victims provided the same Facebook profile for the seller, and detectives traced that to a woman believed to be romantically involved with Mitchell. The Instagram profile under the same account name reportedly posted a video showing a black male; that video was tagged with a second Instagram profile that reportedly posted a video showing Mitchell flashing cash a few hours after the robberies. The victims reportedly identified the male in that video as the seller who had robbed them. Detectives identified the male in the video as Mitchell and found that he lived a short walk from the park.

Mitchell was arrested on November 29 and booked into the Juvenile Detention Center. He was charged as an adult on December 19 and moved to the Alachua County Jail on December 20. Mitchell has juvenile convictions in 2022 and 2023; Judge Thomas Jaworski set bail at $500,000, and Mitchell remains in the Alachua County Jail.

Mitchell has also been charged with battery by a detainee in a correctional facility for an incident that occurred on December 1. Judge Jaworski set bail at $50,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

    • I’m sure mom is so proud of him and his names. Probably one from each possible father.

    • At this point, I’m confident they just throw a bunch of letters into a box, shake them up, drop them on the ground and then line them up.

  • So sad to see all of these brilliant young African Americans just throwing their life away for absolutely nothing. The system makes it hard for African Americans and minorities but that’s just not an excuse to commit crimes. It’s still a lot of opportunity out here. Five hundred dollars you can make a week pretty much working anywhere 🤦‍♂️.

    • The system? Or perhaps the conscious decisions that he himself made as a 17 yr old young man, plenty old enough to know right from wrong??

    • Mr. Andrew if a child is told police are the enemy. Don’t act white while in school by studying. White privedge is going to keep you down. Instead of study hard and make something of yourself. Don’t let nothing hold you back. And most of all you live in the “Greatest” Country on earth, where dreams do come true. Then that child is doomed for failure in will listen to Thugs and follow their lifestyle

    • This guy does not appear to have a ‘brilliant’ bone in his body. That said, the system of soft slavery that was put into effect by LBJ and the Great Society can be blamed.

    • The problem is they don’t know the meaning of the word work it’s easier to rob and steal takes only a couple hours

  • Children with names impossible to pronounce, or spell (themselves), will not integrate properly. Hospitals should prevent these tragedies from happening, the kid starts life on the wrong foot.

  • In this judicial district he may have been charged as an adult but he’s likely to get the same sentence as a 3 year old who says “no” to their parents…
“Go sit in timeout for 10 minutes.”

  • You aren’t a very good criminal. Two armed robberies at the same location and same scenario. All for $450 and bragging about it on video. You are too stupid to make it in the free world.

  • Funny what they’ll do to hop on Facebook or Instagram just to flash their petty little money, I’d like to see how many post he makes bragging about his cash now that he’s incarcerated. These criminals must like showering with and sh*tting in the company of other men because they definitely are not deterred by the thought of jail. Hopefully the next time he decides he wants to rob somebody a lawful victim will exercise their second Amendment and put a stop to his Monkey Business.

  • This is what happens to kids of any race that are raised by parent or parents that don’t care. If you don’t raise them right starting at 5 years old, his friends will do it for you.

  • Guess he won’t be getting that “Bright Futures” scholarship he’s probably been working so hard for…
