17-year-old on probation charged as adult in December car burglaries in Belmont neighborhood

Staff report

NEWBERRY, Fla. – Roman Romel Sheppard, 17, has been charged as an adult for burglarizing multiple vehicles in the Belmont neighborhood with his 16-year-old brother in the early morning hours of December 19.

At about 3:30 a.m. on December 19, a resident of the Belmont neighborhood reported that he had surveillance video showing two black males pulling door handles on multiple vehicles, including his vehicle.

A second resident reported that he had surveillance video of two people trying to break into his vehicle at about 3:35 a.m. The video reportedly shows the two subjects pulling on the door handles of that resident’s vehicle, then walking to the next door neighbor’s house and pulling on the door handles of the neighbor’s vehicle.

An Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy who was canvassing the neighborhood in response to the calls saw someone sitting inside a car, dressed all in black, with a black mask covering his face. When the deputy got out of his car, the suspect, later identified as Roman Sheppard, fled on foot and was detained after a brief foot pursuit. The deputy reportedly found an empty handgun holster in Sheppard’s waistband and found a Glock .40 handgun along Sheppard’s flight path.

Roman Sheppard’s 16-year-old brother allegedly fled in a car that had recently been reported stolen near Tower Road; when a deputy followed him in a patrol car, he reportedly made a U-turn to try to evade the deputy and hit the deputy’s patrol car. He then allegedly ran from the car and was located on foot a few hours later on NW 143rd Street. Post Miranda, he reportedly admitted driving the stolen vehicle and knowing that it was stolen.

Post Miranda, Roman Sheppard admitted that he had been walking around with the intent to commit burglaries, that he had the handgun before seeing the deputy, and that the gun had been stolen from another vehicle that night. He has been charged with two counts of attempted burglary of an unoccupied conveyance, one count of burglary of an unoccupied conveyance, and resisting an officer without violence. Roman Sheppard is currently on juvenile probation for burglary of an unoccupied structure or vehicle and has a curfew of 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Judge Thomas Jaworski set bail at $210,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • He was 17 when his body was frozen in a glacier during the last ice age.

  • Was he dropped on his head during childbirth? Find a lawyer for that defense, a local judge will buy it.🤡👹🥺

  • Why do they all get Probation? I’d like to see the numbers (percentage of criminals on probation that commit another crime). If it is more than 10% (and I’m sure it is), then Probation should be eliminated. Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the crime!

  • Dumb kid. Already on probation for burglary. Break into another car and take a gun. Thus arming himself. Good way to get you and your brother shot. He needs a huge time out.

  • Fell right into that stereotype mold didn’t he?

On a side note, is that bail pretty high for the charges? Belmont too close to judge’s home?

  • Good bond by Jaworski for once.
    Walter Green would be disappointed

  • Plea bargain. Future VOP….
And, has any research been done on the serial numbers on the gun? Has the numbers been grinded off? Any finger prints to run?
ASO deputies have to do more than just arrest perps with a gun these day’s. Obviously that parts is done according to the article.
So what’s next on the gun violence situation? You caught some guys with a gun. Well done 👍 Residents helped seal the deal with surveillance cams. That’s awesome 👍
Did you find a cell phone? Did you search it because a gun was found?
In my opinion ASO has done a fine job here with this one. I really mean that. 👍
But the gun is in an evidence bag somewhere collecting dust. So is the cell devices. (If any)
I know what you guys do is real, and not Hollywood.
But there is a way. There is a legal way. I simply want to make suggestions to help ASO and GPD to help find a “way”.
Thank you for your service 🙏

  • If the residents of Belmont had left more sticks lying around for would-be criminals to commit violence with, perhaps these young men wouldn’t have risked burglarizing vehicles in search of guns. But at least they weren’t armed with guns _and_ sticks before they were caught.

  • These POS’s need some hard labor while in jail. They don’t respect the law and maybe hard labor would give them some respect. The taxpayers will be supporting these two the rest of their lives until someone shoots them.

  • Drag their parent/s off to jail with them. Where’s the deterrence? Maybe make the pro creators of these vermin spend mandatory time with the gun violence committee.

    • Yes, parents should be held responsible for their children to include financial. I’m sure they will claim him and his brother on their tax. And refund should go to ASO for vehicle and victims. Parents should made to personally apologize to police and victims. The old Work Release Center should be turned into a “Boot Camp”. To include working a job.

  • They were out ‘searching’ for those so called ‘violent guns’ that some people keep in their unlocked cars. Most of the thugs & gangbangers get their guns this way. Please secure your firearms.

  • Well now, there’s a face you wouldn’t want to pop out at you in the dark! Whew….
