Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A 17-year-old girl was seriously injured Monday night after being hit by a car on Archer Road.

At about 11:19 p.m. on September 18, the girl was traveling west on a scooter near the 4600 block of SW Archer Road when a sedan driven by a 21-year-old woman hit the scooter, ejecting the girl. The girl sustained serious injuries and was transported to UF Health Shands. According to a Florida Highway Patrol release, she was not wearing a helmet.

  • Her smile and personality will forever be missed. She will be missed but we will always remember her everything.

  • HERRE ARE THE UNANSWERED QUESTIONS: 1) Where is the girl that struck Sonia while she was riding the scooter in the bike lane?
    2) Why did the officer allow her to leave the scene of the accident without first, checking to see if she was under the influence? Was she on a call at the time of the accident? Did she call 911 imediately after she struck her or did she possibly call someone else first (causing Sonia to go without oxygen to her brain longer causing more life altering damage)?
    3) Where is the car that she was driving when she hit her and where is my sons scooter? (Sonia was on his scooter that night because hers was not working)
    4) Will they be filing official charges for this and when will she be made to pay for this crime appropriately?
    5) Why was she driving her vehicle in the bike lane? Was she distracted?
    6) Why does the family still not have the police report when this happened on Monday night?
    7) Why did they assign an investigator to this case that was on vacation since the time of this incident? Why not get someone that can actually start working on the matter immediately before crucial information is lost?

    • All these questions we need answers to! Anyone that was around that may have seen something please reach out!

    • You Are Not Alone we are here to support you I’m so sorry for your loss, but yes we need answers

  • Always had the biggest smile on her face, she really made the best out of everything that came her way!! Full of love and life!!

  • Sad. Was she wearing dark clothing? A common sight these days I see cyclists wearing dark clothes, and at night too.

  • FHP is investigating the crash so there is a current and ongoing follow-up. If any citations or arrest are made right now, the ‘speedy trial rule’ kicks in. In a crash such as this, both vehicles should have been impounded as evidence which they are.

  • This is terrible, I am so sorry for the family of this young lady. I want to know how many people have to die on Archer Rd before something is done about the situation. It has gotten out of hand there is way to much traffic on that road and I never see anyone getting pulled over for traffic violations.

  • I’m confused. The report by WCJB at 6 p.m. yesterday had an interview with family and friends, including a man identified as Carlos Muniz who said he is her brother and that the girl is 16. A follow-up report by WCJB at 11:30 this morning indicated the girl is 17 and said FHP officials determined she was riding an electric scooter “not designed or legal to be operated on the roadway.” The photo above suggests she might not have been fully in the bike lane, even if that were legal; and that stretch of road has sidewalks more appropriate for electric scooters.

I certainly sympathize with the family and friends mourning a tragic accident, but I’m not so sure about laying blame or suggesting it was anything more than a tragic accident.

  • Being on 2 wheel scooter on Archer Rd at 11pm! Whats wrong with that picture?Another one of UF’s Finest!🙄 probably No lights on either!😡

    • I’m really at a loss by your anonymous comment. She was on her way home from work. She is sweet and kind, trying to make her way in this world and is still a child. Her entire life was ripped from her in an instant – her infectious smile…her sweet disposition…gone – most likely for forever. Her family and friends robbed of all of this as well.

Yet you blame the victim, not the driver of the car? Shame on you. And have to do it anonymously. Shame on you. This kind of bs is what is so very wrong with this world….Shame on you.

      • M W …..What’s BS is jumping to conclusions before you have all the facts. Shame on you. At this point, no blame should be aimed at the driver or the victim.

    • She was coming home from work! She had begged her manager for weeks to take her off the late shift as she was afraid to ride that late and btw only one car in her family. And it did have lights.
