18-year-old on probation arrested with a concealed firearm

Staff report

JONESVILLE, Fla. – Caden Freeney, 18, was arrested last night after a firearm and marijuana were reportedly found in his backpack during a traffic stop.

At about 10:07 p.m. on August 22, an Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of NW 136th Boulevard and NW 132nd Circle after observing a sedan driving at a high rate of speed with no rear lights.

The deputy reported smelling marijuana as he approached the car, and Freeney, a passenger in the car, reportedly said he had smoked “weed” earlier in the evening; the occupants did not have medical marijuana cards.

A search of the car reportedly produced a backpack on the floor of the back seat, containing a loaded Glock 21 and about 12.4 grams of marijuana; small pieces of marijuana were also found in the seat where Freeney had been sitting. Another occupant of the car reportedly said Freeney had the backpack with him when he got into the car.

Post Miranda, Freeney reportedly said his money was in the backpack.

Freeney has been charged with unlawfully carrying a concealed firearm and possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana. He is on juvenile probation for grand theft of a motor vehicle and resisting an officer without violence. Judge Gloria Walker set bail at $20,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • LEOs should station themselves at the MurphyUSA & Wawa gas stations; they’ll have plenty of opportunities to smell marijuana and make an arrest.

Almost forgot, school drop-offs as well. Isn’t smoking and possession of pot illegal on school properties?

    • Appears to be at least 2 people concerned with the PoPo monitoring the suggested locations.

  • Very sad that at 18 years old he was already on probation for a previous crime and now arrested for drug and gun possession. Parents need to be on top of what their kids are doing at a young age, who are the kids they hang out with, what are they doing/posting/looking at on social media. I get it, he is now an adult and needs to be held accountable as an adult, but we as parents need to start early teaching our kids that stealing/drugs only lead to other crimes and then they end up in jail/prison.

    • It’s very sad that 18 year old kids find it so easily available to get a gun I wonder why?

  • Low bails and slaps on the wrist for gun crimes are just asking for worse crimes in the future. It is sad this boy is in the school to jail pipeline, but the lack of consequences for his actions will eventually put him there, hopefully before he hurts someone, or worse.

    • There is no such thing as a School to Jail pipeline. There are a lot of kids that go to school and don’t go to jail. The reason kids go to jail is because they break the law.
