19-year-old arrested for carrying concealed AK-47-style pistol

Staff report

NEWBERRY, Fla. – Romance Lamar Bryant, Jr., 19, was arrested early this morning for unlawfully carrying a concealed Draco AK-47-style pistol.

At about 2:34 a.m. on May 8, an Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop on a bicycle for riding against the flow of traffic with no lights on SR 45 in Newberry.

The deputy reportedly asked Bryant whether he had any weapons and noted this “is a standard question on all stops.” When Bryant said he did, the deputy followed up by asking about the weapon, and Bryant reportedly said he had an “assault rifle” in his backpack. Bryant was detained because 19-year-olds cannot lawfully carry a concealed firearm; the deputy also reported that Bryant and the backpack smelled like marijuana.

A search of Bryant’s backpack reportedly produced a Draco AK-47-style pistol with a loaded magazine of 7.62×39 bullets.

Post Miranda, Bryant reportedly said a friend had given him the backpack at a nearby gas station, a few minutes before the stop. He said he knew there was a gun in the backpack and he knew he could not legally carry a concealed firearm because he is under 21. He reportedly expressed regret for his choice to carry the firearm and denied possessing any drugs but said he might have a small amount of marijuana in his jacket.

A search incident to arrest reportedly produced one broken oxycodone pill, which Bryant spontaneously said was “probably a perc.”

Bryant has been charged with unlawfully carrying a concealed firearm and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. He has no criminal history; Judge Adam Lee set bail at $30,000.

  • This may go Fed. Not sure. I know the Feds have been picking up a lot of the “switch” gun cases. Not sure if this type of Draco gun qualifies as a machine gun.

    • The “switches” you refer to go on Glocks, not Dracos. If this Draco is unmodified, then it is an ordinary gun available in any gun store for about $1000. It is just a semi automatic pistol, although a very powerful one.

  • Gee, how could anyone imagine that here in America with our tough laws, that an after midnight bicycle riding teenager with drugs would be carrying a $1000 weapon designed for killing people.

Shocking I tell you! It’s the liberals fault!

    • lol at our “tough laws.” Far too many “teenagers” like him are given slaps on the wrist for firearms crimes, and yes Jazzy, leftists like yourself are to blame. This kid will be another “man on probation” story here in no time.

Blacks are overwhelmingly represented in firearms offenses along with violent crimes, but punishing them appropriately for those offenses was deemed racist by infantile morons on your side of the aisle. Take a look at Chicago and their complete failure at addressing violence for further research.

    • This young man had no respect for himself or others. No law will stop someone like that.

  • Thug wannabe’s are just about everywhere you look these days. Openly smoke pot outside stores and restaurants, half of society seems to be all doped up.

  • WTF only 19, where’d he attend skool at? No wonder Newberry wanted to convert all their schools to charter. Too bad they only got elementary done.

    ACLUSPLCDNC 👺👿🤡👹🤣

  • Romance? Who in their right mind would name a child Romance? Especially a boy? No wonder the kid carries, he has to defend himself all the time….Romance?
