19-year-old Newberry man killed in crash near Melrose

A 19-year-old Newberry man was killed early this morning in a single-vehicle accident near Melrose.
At about 3:00 a.m. on October 6, multiple crews from Alachua County Fire Rescue, Melrose Fire Department, and law enforcement agencies responded to NE State Road 26 near County Road 219A. A vehicle driven by a 19-year-old Newberry man had been traveling westbound on SR 26 at a high rate of speed, then traveled off the roadway onto the south grass shoulder, where it overturned and struck a large tree. The driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, had to be extricated from the vehicle and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The cause of the crash is under investigation by Florida Highway Patrol.
