2 young women killed in Paynes Prairie crash

At about 3:16 p.m. today, an SUV traveling north on U.S. 441 in the outside travel lane near Paynes Prairie crossed the grass median into the path of a van traveling southbound in the inside travel lane. The front of the van hit the side of the SUV.

The driver of the SUV, a 26-year-old female from Gainesville, and the passenger of the SUV, a 32-year-old female from Gainesville, were both pronounced deceased at the scene. Both were wearing seatbelts. The driver of the van, a 57-year-old male from Gainesville, had minor injuries. He was also wearing a seatbelt.

Both lanes of U.S 441 were closed for some time, but they are now reopened.

The crash is still under investigation.

  • We passed through that accident today. It was an unbelievable crash site. My ex who I was riding with said, that was bad, somebody got hurt in that one. I looked and yes yes quietly whispering a prayer for the victims. I am sorry to hear that anyone died and I am asking GOD to give the families strength. I am also sending up prayers for traveling mercies and safety for everyone traveling the highways during this 4th if July holiday. It is done right now. In the matchless name of Jesus Christ. Amen
