39th Avenue (State Road 222) resurfacing project begins next week

Press release from Florida Department of Transportation

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Construction is scheduled to begin on Monday, Aug. 18, on a project to mill and resurface Northwest 39th Avenue (State Road 222) from Northwest 95th Boulevard to Northwest 40th Terrace.

Preferred Materials Inc. was awarded the contract to complete this $10.5 million project, which includes milling and resurfacing; lighting enhancements; new roadway signage; sidewalk, curb, and driveway improvements; traffic signal upgrades; and other incidental construction.

Drivers can expect lane closures and flagging operations between 8 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. seven days a week. Drivers may also expect to see law enforcement performing traffic control at intersections during overnight operations.

Completion is expected in fall 2025, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting.

  • This is great news – it’s badly needed. BUT,

Why would you do this right when students start school – and many return to town from Summer break.

The time to do this was during the Summer!

    • I thought that originally, too, until I read the article. Students aren’t usually causing an influx of traffic between 8pm-6:30am when they’ve scheduled the closures/road work…

      • But a lot of people are driving into work from the suburbs (ie UF Health, the University, and others).

    • It is Summer.

I’m just hoping they have a warranty so we don’t have to pay again next Summer.

  • Why in the world would anyone think that this is a good idea at the same time NW 23 is being repaved and revamped? Is anyone in charge with any brains? Someone please put a stop to this until at least one thoroughfare is completed! There are schools and businesses on that route, and even though this will happen overnight, this is poorly planned out and should be reconsidered. As far as NW 23rd, the construction that stared in early June looks as if almost nothing is being done, and the road crews are almost never on the job. No wonder it will take so long to complete. There is a skeleton crew working on it, just as I predict will be the case on NW 39th! Good luck. Neighbors, COMPLAIN!!!

  • Alachua County roads are terrible. This should be continued all the way out to Gilchrist County line.

  • At least you all are getting new roads up there. No paving love for the deep southwest side of town.

  • Why do they paved ok and fine roads but leave the terrible potholes etc. 53rd ave is a death trap with those waves especially after the rain. It should be at least 2 lane and have a real shoulder. Here are miles of acreage on the north side. Widest banks in town
