Staff report from release by Florida Highway Patrol
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A 77-year-old Gainesville woman was seriously injured this morning when she was hit by a car on Tower Road.
At about 8:10 a.m. on October 24, a Ford Fiesta driven by a 47-year-old Gainesville woman was traveling north on Tower Road, just north of SW 75th Court (Park Lane), when the 77-year-old woman attempted to walk across the roadway. The pedestrian entered the path of the vehicle and was hit, suffering serious injuries. She was transported to a local hospital.
Sorry about the injury, but via google street view, I don’t see any pedestrian crossings across Tower Road thereabouts –no “walk signs,” no nuthin to help anybody who wants to get from one side to the other. The only option legally to avoid jay walking appears to be walking all the way to Archer Road.
You should walk down to the light to safely cross. I have witnessed daredevils crossing with their children in banana strollers to get to Publix. They’d rather risk a kids life to safe a few seconds by avoiding the safe way and legal way to cross…..don’t worry though the county will put in a massive pedestrian/vehicle fiasco crossing soon after this!
Our healing prayers are for the injured. That location on SW 75th street is where two lanes going north merge into one. Most drivers merge carefully going the speed limit or slower. Unfortunately, some drivers accelerate well over the speed limit adding to the danger. A few speeding tickets issued might help slow things down to a safer speed.
Not when you got to walk 2 damn mile up the road just to cross to the other side.
Chronic problem in this area of Tower Rd. Hope she heals well.
I hope she heals well to and I am the 12 year old that witnessed this it was horrible
I hope you are able to talk to someone about what you witnessed. I am sure it was very disturbing for you. School counselors should be available to help you, too.
Three lane merge areas on the west side of Gainesville are extremely hazardous for pedestrians and bikes. 1) Tower Road by Tower Square, 2) SW 24th Ave. around the SW 61st Street intersection and 3) SW 20th Ave. approaching the Hogtown Creek Bridge near Forest Park from either direction.
These areas seem to have real problems with traffic engineering because lots of drivers unsafely speed up going into the merge zones.
The cretins in City Hall should stop wasting money on GRACE Marketplace “street team” and spend the money on a jaywalking ticketing street team. Would actually solve a real problem and earn money for the city instead of just wasting it.
Sat in traffic a few nights ago on University Ave where they just spent over a year and who knows how many millions of dollars putting in raised crosswalks all over the place. Dozens of people were crossing the road, but not a single one of them used the new crosswalks.
