88-year-old Gainesville woman killed in crash near Turkey Creek

Staff report

ALACHUA, Fla. – An 88-year-old Gainesville woman was killed tonight when she pulled out onto U.S. Hwy 441 into the path of a pickup truck.

According to a release from Florida Highway Patrol, at about 6:57 p.m. on Saturday evening, the woman, who was driving a white sedan south on CR 237, pulled out onto U.S. 441 by the Dollar General. A maroon pickup truck driven by a 24-year-old High Springs man was traveling northbound on U.S. 441, and the sedan drove into his path while crossing the northbound lanes.

The woman was pronounced deceased at the scene; the man sustained minor injuries. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

  • Very sad news. Some would say 88 is too old to drive however drivers fly way over the speed limit on 441. Bring back the speed traps and save lives.

    • Even if he was going 55 which we have no idea if he was speeding , he hit her in the driver side even at 45 that’s enough to kill someone .

  • County Rd 237. Another county maintained roadway that has been neglected and ignored for 25+ years.
Public Works can’t miss it, it’s only a mile from their location in Hague.

  • Alas, we all get to that point, if we live long enough, to lose some of our alertness, may she go home and rest w/our SWEET JESUS.

  • I drive that road everyday to work the amount of people who can’t wait 30 secs to pull out is unbelievable. I hit my breaks multiple times a trip to stop from hitting people who pull out from the side roads and center lane

  • There needs to be a light at that intersection!! It is sooo dangerous! And is the Sheriff’s Dept. stopping anyone for speeding? So many horrible accidents on 441! Why are we in such a rush?

    • It’s only as dangerous as the person driving it. It doesn’t need a traffic light and please don’t give the county any ideas, they’ll be putting a circle jerk in.

      • Traffic circle, and narrow the roadway. 🙂 My son used to say that if a Gainesville road had too much traffic, the city would narrow the streets and put in traffic circles.

    • FHP sits just north of Turkey Creek entrance on 441 and APD also patrols that stretch often. It’s not a lack of enforcement causing accidents it’s the inattentive driving habits that lead to most crashes. Stop blaming law enforcement for everything that goes wrong in the world.

  • So sad for her death and so sad for the young man that has to live with this tragedy for the rest of his life. Very sad.

    • It is a sad story all around but, yeah I really feel for the person that hit her.
