Abandoned building on Archer Road destroyed by Monday night fire

Press release from Alachua County Fire Rescue

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – On Monday, May 29, Alachua County Fire Rescue and Gainesville Fire Rescue responded to multiple reports of smoke in the 6300 block of SW Archer Road. Initial reports stated that there might be a large wildfire in the area, but the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office quickly arrived on scene and advised of a fully involved structure fire in an abandoned structure.

ACFR arrived on scene and began firefighting operations. The building was a total loss, but the fire was contained to the building of origin. The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s office. No injuries were reported. Archer Road was shut down to all eastbound traffic for approximately one hour due to firefighting operations.

  • Saw the fire on the way home from a movie. “Structure fire” doesn’t do it justice, it was a bonafide inferno, and I could see as much even through the foliage that blocked off most of the buildings from view.
