Adults will receive laptops at library event

Press release from Alachua County Library District

GAINESVILLE, Fla. –  In partnership with the United Way of North Central Florida, Cox Communications, and First Federal Bank, the Alachua County Library District will be hosting a laptop giveaway on Wednesday, Oct. 12. The event will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in Meeting Room A, on the 4th floor of the Headquarters Library. The event will begin with check-in from 5 to 5:15 p.m., with training and partner presentations from 5:20 to 6:30 p.m.

The program was only available to Alachua County residents and will give away 75 refurbished laptops to adults in need of technology.

Each recipient of a laptop will receive computer training as well as access to support information. The program is designed to give laptops to people who need help with improving their literacy, continuing their education, or developing their digital work skills. More than 150 individuals registered to receive a laptop. Supporting individuals’ ability to access and use technology is an important mission for all our partners.

Once recipients receive their laptops, staff and volunteers from the Library District will be providing training classes on vital computer skills to help build their digital knowledge through our resources. Cox Communication will deliver a presentation about how individuals can get reduced connectivity costs and how individuals can use the Cox Academy to help. First Federal Bank will provide participants with financial literacy resources.

  • The legislature needs to allow Alachua County voters to vote on sunsetting the insane library property tax.

    • Sun setting it in their vocabulary. We need to tear this wasteful tax immediately. Who voted to give away free laptops to people that can probably buy one if they needed it?
