Alachua County and O-Town Compost begin food waste collection pilot at Rural Collection Centers

ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – Beginning January 3, 2026, and continuing through December 31, 2026, Alachua County residents can drop off food waste at the County’s five Rural Collection Centers for composting. Alachua County has partnered with O-Town Compost through a Circular Economy Grant, which will divert food waste from the landfill and turn it into compost so it may be used by farmers, gardeners, landscapers, and others.

Rural Collection Center Locations:

  • Alachua/High Springs – 16929 NW US Hwy 441
  • Archer – 19401 SW Archer Rd.
  • Fairbanks – 9920 NE Waldo Rd.
  • North Central – 10714 N State Rd. 121
  • Phifer – 11700 SE Hawthorne Rd.

All of the Rural Collection Centers are open Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Alachua/High Springs location is also open on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

  • Who in their right mind, is going to want to put food waste into their vehicle whether in sealed container or not, and stink it up to bring to collection centers?🙄
    We have some real bright people that thinks these things up!😢

    • Many of those currently using the Rural Collection Centers put their food scraps and inedible food waste in along with all their other trash – and then haul it to the RCCs in their vehicles.
      Drop off collection centers for food scraps and inedible food waste are in use in many places across the USA.
