Alachua County Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board vacancies

Press release from Alachua County
ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – Alachua County is seeking volunteers to fill two upcoming Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board vacancies. Those interested should submit applications by August 1, 2023.
The Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board (BPAB) makes recommendations to the Alachua County Commission, the Gainesville City Commission, and the Metropolitan Transportation Planning Organization (MTPO) on all matters concerning planning, implementation, and maintenance of policies, programs, and facilities for the safe and efficient integration of bicycle and pedestrian transportation into the Gainesville Metropolitan Area and Alachua County transportation systems. The BPAB consists of citizen volunteers with a special interest and expertise in bicycle and pedestrian issues. The City Commission, County Commission, and MTPO each appoint four members. In addition, one student seat is appointed. The County Commission currently needs to appoint citizens for two citizen-at-large vacancies.
Those interested should apply online.
If you are looking for a volunteer opportunity that allows you to give back to your community and participate in your County’s decision-making process, serving on an Alachua County Advisory Board offers you this chance. The County Commission relies on input from these Boards to make informed decisions and set policies.
Drivers have an interest in the way roads and tax money are used also, but are not represented? Typical for here.
There is a Citizen’s Advisory committee to the MPO – the combined City and County Commissions – which looks at and advises on all transportation issues, the majority of which deal with roads and automobiles. And of course, almost all members of the Bicycle Ped Board are also automobile drivers. Any citizens of course are welcome to apply for the various advisory boards were you would have ample opportunity to weigh in issues and express your preferences.
Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha, good luck with that one. Let me know how it works out for ya 😉
Maybe you and your buddy can get involved in a more constructive manner by seeking membership to one or more of the various county advisory boards.
Simple common sense advice to bicycle rider and pedestrians. Pedestrians use crosswalks and obey state laws about crossing roadways. Bicycles stay in the bike lanes and ride defensively. Unlike some may think, you are no match for a motor vehicle weighing several thousand pounds. And it will only get worse with electric vehicle that weigh even more than gas vehicles and are ultra quiet. I realize that auto drivers to are part of the problem but I see more people throughout the county walking, running, and riding who tempt fate with cars.
