Alachua County confirms that parcel marketed for a data center is in the unincorporated county

ALACHUA, Fla. – Alachua County Growth Management Director Jeffrey Hays has confirmed that the site that was previously marketed as a site suitable for a high-megawatt data center is in the unincorporated county, not in the City of Alachua.

After an outcry from residents, the real estate agent appears to have removed the language that indicated the site would be suitable for a data center. The property was originally marketed as a “data center development site”; the URL slug for the listing still includes “high-megawatt-data-center-development-site,” but the heading now markets the property as an “industrial redevelopment opportunity.”

At the May 18 Alachua City Commission meeting, a large number of people spoke in opposition to the development of data centers in the city, but they were told that the site is not in the city limits of Alachua.

We reached out to Alachua County Commissioner Anna Prizzia, who asked Hays about the site. Hays sent the following response: “The property itself is in the unincorporated area, but it is not currently approved for a data center. Any development or redevelopment of the property would require a Planned Development rezoning consistent with a specific Comprehensive Plan policy for that Rural Employment Center. Staff is not aware of any recent specific proposals related to this parcel.”

While the property is in the unincorporated county, the sales brochure says that wastewater service is provided by the City of Alachua, with gas from Florida Gas and unspecified utilities from GRU.

  • Why should we care about this? Sounds like a big rumor. At least it’s not a slaughterhouse.

  • Who cares if it’s suitable? There’s many parcels in Alachua County that are suitable for something except to some people.

    • The ‘I got mine but don’t want you to get yours’ crowd has spoken. Those are ‘some people’.

  • Don’t count on the County Commissioners to follow the Comprehensive Plan. They haven’t in the past and I doubt that they will in the future unless the members of that board are changed. Plans for them are just ”suggestions”, that they most likely will ignore.

  • Data centers use a lot of energy and water. But can’t that be recycled, or renewable in a college town?

  • It is a myth that data centers use a lot of water. Power for sure, but the water it uses is in a closed system for chillers to pump ac. I bet the same people who are against data centers now would have been against having electricity into their homes in the early 20th century … or worried about what the farrier would do for work with the advent of the motor vehicle.

    • The megawatts used to power creates a human along with tge water pumps tgat cool the water used. This hum without noise mitigation or buffers would enter into people’s homes. Yes its a rural area but there are still residents within area. People equate the sound to a continuous vibration of a washing machine running through the walls. Plus I also wonder how the road conditions will be during the construction of said Megawatt Data Center. We already have enough potholes.

    • Thumbs down all you want but if Data Centers used that much water and power do you really think that UF would have built one on East Campus? They have one of the most powerful AI computers in the nation .. and I bet every one of you had no flippin idea it was there LoL

      • Hundred3y35, the answer is yes, they would. And the interior of that building is as loud as a jet turbine. Everyone in the facility must use hearing protection at all times. Try not to hurt yourself next time pretending to be the smartest guy in the room.

  • If there is a tax dollar to be made, you can bet the politicians will zone it anyway necessary to collect the taxes.

  • Perhaps they can build a new and modern Fire Station / Sheriff Substation as well. That will help!

  • Say No to those data centers…they are not good for the planet. 🌎

Those data centers will be using a lot of water from the aquifer to cool themselves down…

they should have to buy their electricity from GRU and buy used recycled water from the wastewater treatment plant to cool themselves down….

They are not environmentally friendly and will be increasing the counties’ carbon footprint exponentially.. these data centers add to global warming…

Put it in someone else’s backyard.

  • Data centers are a way for rich developers to snatch up “virgin” land for pennies on the dollar, which will sold off at massive profits and converted into HOAs and strip malls after the AI bubble bursts. Same as car washes, just at a much larger scale.

    • Data centers are a way for the Epstein class to bring the AI Eye of Sauron to life. Call it what you want but this is all about total surveillance.

      • I call it the “all seeing eye of Lucifer”…

They need the data centers because they are implementing one world global totalitarianism with their great reset….

It’s the 5th Industrial Revolution: Transhumanism.

The AI is going to use our bodies, eyes, and ears as sensors…

AI, if it could, wants to be god, like government…

They have self assembling nano technology and Shwab from the WEF said” the pandemic was the perfect cover to implement the “great reset” …they want technology in your body by 2030 that can determine your carbon footprint…the nano is so small that it can get through the blood/brain barrier…

Don’t take those mRNA shots and so no to vax passports! Like in revelations, you will not be able to engage in commerce if you don’t get the vax shots…

The devil is hiding behind the environment..
