Alachua County Public Works installs new statue honoring Alachua County firefighters

Press release from Alachua County
ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – When heavy lifting is involved, the other County departments depend on the Road & Bridge Division of the Alachua County Public Works Department to get the job done. The Road and Bridge Division took delivery and installed a new statute this week at the recently completed Fire Rescue Station 80 (10180 SW 24th Ave, Gainesville). Steven Whyte of Carmel, California, created the bronze statue of the young female firefighter ready for duty. The challenge was to install the heavy new statue without damaging the statue or the newly constructed sidewalks.
Public Works Director Ramon D. Gavarrete, P.E, managed the design and construction of the new station and was proud that his department’s Traffic Maintenance Unit could put the finishing touches on the project by installing the new statue honoring Alachua County Firefighters and the County’s commitment to diversity.
Not saying that women shouldn’t be recognized for their roles and contributions within emergency services, and society in general, but I can’t help but wonder why a County that supposedly prides itself in it’s inclusionary practices decided to exclude men.
Even the library has statues that reflect boys and girls.
Fire Station 21 will have a similar bronze sculpture depicting a male.
Excellent!
Why did they have to go all the way to California to find someone to make a female statue? Local artists only make giant chickens?
No, local “artists” can also put balls on UF’s French fries and call it “original”.
Actually it was a local artist and she is the person running for the Republican seat against Comm Prizzia. Jenn Garrett is the who did the sculpture you are talking about.
That’s not who the story credited with doing the sculpture.
Yes it was Newberry Jen who copied the UF French fries and called it original. Now she wants a gummint paycheck for advocating the disaster called the “Republican agenda” to destroy America.
Safe to say Biden isn’t the only one losing his wits.
The County did put out an RFA and this was one of the artists that submitted a proposal. They do this for every Art in Public Places project.
I hope the concrete slab is thick enough to hold the weight, won’t crack in the future. It’d be a pain to redo that.
Was this art statue donated or did our taxes pay for this and if so how much
Wait for it…
I like it! We have a law enforcement memorial in Gainesville. We should have one for our friends in fire rescue.
It’s about time.
